So needless to say, I've been watching a lot of miyazaki movies this past month, so I thought about reviewing them. However the first three might be much less detailed, as I've seen them quite a while ago at this point. sorry =I But I thought I might as well give quick reviews for em anyways. First review: Ponyo.
Ponyo is actually one of Miyazaki's latest films, made in 2008. It is based on the classic "The Little Mermaid" very very loosely. Ponyo is about a small fish who wants to become a girl because she loves a little boy named Sosuke. Her dad isn't so keen on the idea though. Her dad is Fujimoto, an underwater wizard who hates humankind and loves the sea. No litterally loves it. He marries a living embodiment of the sea, go figure. So anyways, Ponyo escapes her dad's underwater castle and meets Sosuke. Sosuke, thinking she's a little goldfish(yeah because goldfish have faces) takes her in as a pet. Sosuke, being a vewy gwown up wittwe boy, is very responsible with Ponyo and Ponyo seems to notice. She claims to have fallen in love with him...because 5 year olds know these things. So then her daddy comes along and tries to get Ponyo back, but Ponyo just escapes again and tries to litterally sprout arms and legs to become a real girl. She then litterally runs on the sea making a gigantic thunderstorm, trying to see Sosuke, which by the way destroys the fabric of reality and brings the Earth closer to a fiery gas ball-y death. BUT ISN'T SHE SO CWUTE WITH HEW WANTING TO SEE HEW BOY....so anyways, Her mother finds out and is like "OH NO U DI'ENT" to the mean ole daddy, and goes off to save the day....she is the Sea ya know.
But because of the storm from earlier, Sosuke's mommy goes off somewhere and leaves the two toddlers alone in an abandoned house....it sounds better in context...I think...But so then when the storm stops, his mother isn't back! So yeah, they go off to find her...even though she's in an underwater bubble with everyone else. And instead of going off to get the little children who are alone in a flooded city, the Seamom's like, "they must learn on their own." kay. And did I mention Ponyo's losing magic?...yeah she's turning back into a fish. Good job Sea Mom. But so they find their way, the Sea Mom gives Ponyo the chance to be a real girl again, if she really loves him....and this somehow would stop the fabric of reality from dying. True love conquers all indeed. So she can only be a girl forever, if he kisses her. Everyone's back to normal, everyone's alive, she kisses him and turns human, the end. By the way like I said earlier, I'm reviewing this out of sheer memory, so if I get mistakes, bare with me.
But yah, thats Ponyo. Fish girl of the Sea moms. Not one of Miyazaki's best films, but not one of his worst (if there really is bad ones to begin with >_>) Its probably one of his more dazzling pictures with his signature anime eye candy, and has a very interesting personification of itself and the waters compared to his other films. I say go see it if your hankerin' for some fantastic visuals and a fairly interesting story. just like any other miyazaki film :P I'm not doing ratings, so suck it. fare thee well.
